West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust
Description: The project involved the provision of new doors to suit compartmentation levels of fire and smoke resistance, filling penetrations through compartment walls, providing pyroshield safety clear glazing to existing glazed panels to stairs, door surrounds and external windows. Asbestos was removed in advance of these works. The building services upgrade comprised the installation of new motorised fire and smoke shut-off dampers, the removal of plate fire dampers and fire hose reels, and the upgrade of fire alarm and emergency lighting systems.
Procurement: EC Contract Option C Target Cost
Value: £5.0m
Programme: 58 weeks
Vision
To upgrade the Princess Michael of Kent and Maternity Blocks at Watford General to meet with current fire regulations.
Challenge
Both hospitals were to remain fully operational throughout the room by room upgrade; there could be no interruption to the delivery of clinical services. Fire detection systems and emergency lighting had to remain in full readiness until all new systems had been commissioned and were operational.
Solution
A clear communication and decision making structure was established at the outset. Early and continuing close liaison with users Estates Managers and the infection control nurse was a key feature in the success of the project. The needs of patients and clinicians were of paramount importance. Very detailed attention was given to points of access, working methods, (which included asbestos removal) and working hours and sequencing.
Benefit
Full team working and thorough planning ensured that the project was completed on time and that the impact on patients and clinicians was negligible.
