Vision

To ensure that principal hospital departments, including Acute Wards, A and E, Outpatients, Central Kitchen, EMI Units and CSSD comply fully with current fire regulations.

Challenge

All departments were to remain fully operational throughout the room by room upgrade.

Solution

A Fire Risk Assessment in terms of hazards (ignition sources and combustible materials) and precautions (prevention, communication, means of escape, containment and extinguishment) was carried out and assessment records and compensation sheets prepared in line with HTM 86 – Fire Risk Assessments in Hospitals format. HTM 83 and HTM 85 were adopted for high risk patients. Recommendations were made for both passive and active systems.

Benefit

The early and collaborative management of risk and on-going liaison with clinicians, other users and infection control nurses helped to ensure that the impact of the works on the delivery of services to patients and staff was minimised. The project was completed early and below the GMP.
