Vision:

To produce a design that compliments the existing structure provides a modern and efficient building that enhances patient care, provides the correct level of security in a subtle manner and provides staff with a pleasant environment within which to work.

Challenge:

The challenge presented by the Humber project is to deliver an extension to an existing mental health hospital for this demanding patient group whilst not compromising the existing facilities security or services.

Solution:

To design a building which reflected the Trust aspirations and that of the stakeholders. 3-D images were developed of the project and entrance to explain the interaction of the extension with the existing unit. Site logistics have been designed to ensure that the construction is carried out with the minimum of disruption to the service. Through open days, newsletters, notice boards and weekly Heads of Departments meetings the Trust and site team are kept fully informed of progress and planned works.

Benefit:

The layout of the bedrooms and associated therapy spaces within the unit allows for a triumvirate model of care with the benefit of being able to separate patients by gender or into small groups within the same unit and still allow access to all facilities.
