Vision
To expand and upgrade the existing Radiology Department in advance of the closure of the Nuclear Medicine Unit at Hertford County Hospital.
Challenge
Providing a two-storey extension to the existing facility, which was also to be remodelled and refurbished, within an inner courtyard surrounded by other departments. Service delivery was to continue throughout the construction period. Noise and dust were particular issues and asbestos materials had to be removed.
Solution
A clear communication structure, thorough planning and on-going liaison with Radiographers throughout the construction period were critical success factors. The two-storey, 310m2 extension and remodelling has created space for the relocation of the existing single head scanner, a new ‘Starlight’ dual head scanner and for the expansion of Nuclear Medicine, with a new laboratory/isotope room/preparation area. The existing Reception and Waiting Area has been expanded and office space reconfigured. A new 40 seat Conference Room, to enable case conferences to take place, has been provided.
Benefit
Architecture and interior design were integrated at the outset to produce a therapeutic and calming ambience out of very little.
