Extensions and alterations to existing ICU Department together with a new Orthopaedic Theatre, staff accommodation, and plant rooms.

Procurement: Design & Build
Value: £1.4m
Programme: 40 weeks

Vision: The hospital wants to provide a resource that will enable them to take orthopaedic surgery to the front of innovation and technology as well as benefiting their fracture patients.

Challenge: Try to minimise dust and noise due to adjacent working operating theatre and ICU departments. Could not be any clinical services downtime when changing plantroom. Ensure that the new plantroom provided the Trust with room for flexibility to increase service in the future.

Solution: The theatre has been fitted out with an ultra-clean air system, which circulates the air much more frequently than in a standard theatre, blowing ultra-clean air down onto the patient and out into the theatre. This air flow is an important pre-requisite for joint replacement surgery, to minimise the risk of infection. Working with the Trust and key stakeholders to understand current and future demands on plantroom services in order to provide the best advice. Worked extensively with the Trust’s infection control team and estate to minimise dust and nose pollution throughout the construction process.

Benefit: Having the extra ultra-clean air theatre will mean that Torbay Hospital can expand the amount of orthopaedic operations carried out each year, including around 20% more joint replacements. Additional, new disabled access was formed to all areas.
