Description: 9000 m2, 4 storey extension at the front of existing hospital to provide new departments for the relocation of Radiology, Endoscopy Suites, Emergency Treatment and Admissions Unit, Obstetrics and Maternity and general bed space and plant rooms

Challenge: The project was to be built on a sloping site and had to include a Paediatric Emergency Centre which was to be a ‘child friendly’ environment.

Solution: The project was built into a sloping site, resulting in a part basement for Level 1. This area was bounded by a full height waterproof concrete structure to protect the general x-ray facilities, MRI and CT Scanners. The Level 2 Accident and Emergency Department included a dedicated Paediatric Emergency Centre with non-clinical finishes to provide a homely, Settling environment for the child visitors. The design mirrored an airport lounge complete with an aircraft as a check-in desk
